The sound of a steam locomotive whistle echoed through downtown Bartlesville this morning to mark the start the "homecoming parade" for AT&SF No. 940 back to the city's depot. The historic locomotive has been displayed behind a high fence in Johnstone Park for more than 53 years.

Train, Depot Celebration Planned

A combined celebration of the 100th birthday of the Bartlesville depot and the homecoming of AT&SF No. 940 will be held for the public this Thursday at the depot.

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 5:30 p.m.

Children and adults will be able to enter the cab of No. 940 and ring its bell, which has been silent for more than 50 years while the historic locomotive stood behind a high fence in Johnstone Park. Last week the 150-ton locomotive was moved back to the depot, which itself is a historic landmark that opened on Dec. 17, 1909.

Historic Locomotive No. 940 "Homecoming Parade" Tomorrow

The public is invited to welcome steam locomotive AT&SF No. 940 back to the Bartlesville depot tomorrow (Dec. 9), beginning with a "homecoming parade" starting at 9 a.m. The 47-foot-long locomotive will depart from a staging area behind Memorial Stadium and travel the four-block route in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Two massive cranes will arrive in Johnstone Park this afternoon (Sunday, Dec. 6) to prepare for the return of historic locomotive AT&SF No. 940 to the Bartlesville depot on Wednesday.

Locomotive move schedule announced

After a 53-year absence, historic steam locomotive No. 940 is heading back to Bartlesville depot. The journey from Johnstone Park to a new display track next to the depot is scheduled to begin Dec. 7 and conclude Dec. 10.

Rotary Club spearheads historic locomotive project

The Bartlesville Rotary Club, which was instrumental in bringing AT&SF No. 940 to Bartlesville more than 50 years ago, is taking the lead in funding the completion of the locomotive's new home at the Bartlesville depot.

For the Love of Trains: Volunteers complete display track for 106-year-old AT&SF No. 940 steam locomotive

Tom Birkett and Jay Hastings allocated three weeks to build 200 feet of display track at the Santa Fe Depot. The 106-year-old AT&SF No. 940 steam locomotive and her tender will be relocated from Johnstone Park to the depot in early December. Both Birkett and Hastings have years of railway experience. Neither has ever built track. They completed the project in 4.5 days.

AT&SF No. 940 Moving to the Depot

Preparations for the relocation of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe No. 940 steam locomotive are under way thanks to a generous grant from The Lyon Foundation and support from ConocoPhillips. Relocation of this rare 106 year-old engine from Johnstone Park to the Santa Fe Depot is the first phase of a $130,000 historic preservation project, which also includes cosmetic restoration, historical displays, decorative lighting and a protective awning.

Council hears about train locomotive

A resolution pertaining to the Santa Fe Locomotive No. 940 Preservation Fund was amended by the Bartlesville City Council last night. The amendment was brought before the council by Capt. Jay Hastings of the Bartlesville Police Department, who was requesting the amendment to broaden the scope of the fund to accept donations for repairing, rehabilitating, maintaining and restoring the locomotive.

Trains News Wire - Santa Fe steamer to move

Published: Tuesday, November 10, 2009 BARTLESVILLE, Okla.
Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 2-10-2 steam engine No. 940 will be moved to a new display location at Bartlesville's historic Santa Fe station. The locomotive is currently displayed in a local park, and preservationists are hoping to raise money to cosmetically restore the engine.
The city bought No. 940 in 1956 for $1 to save it from scrap, and it's sat in Johnstone Park ever since. The 106-year-old engine is set to move over a four-day period starting Dec. 7.
